The Reimei Research Program 2024 Call for research proposals

Outline and eligible research themes

The Reimei Research Program is a joint research program with the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) with aims for the discovery of innovative research themes based on novel ideas solicited from domestic and foreign researchers. Eligible themes must be for international collaborative research, rich in originality, novelty, developability, and challenge, that seeks innovative principles and phenomena in the field of nuclear science and its peripheral fields to change existing scientific and technological paradigms and develop into future innovations in nuclear science.

Applicant qualifications

A principal investigator who belongs to domestic or foreign universities or research institutes (including JAEA) and is actually engaged in research. Additionally, the research project has to be affiliated with foreign universities or research institutes.

*Application is deemed to be made on the premise that all stated budgetary and contractual terms and conditions are fully understood and agreed to. Please refer to the Guideline of the Reimei Research Program and the Reimei joint research arrangement.

Embodiment of research

The JAEA enters into a joint research agreement on the basis of the JAEA regulation with the applicants' institutions. Prior to application, it is desirable for contracting parties to confirm Reimei joint research arrangement so that a contract can be signed smoothly after adoption. The terms and conditions stated in Joint Research Agreement shall not be negotiable unless governed by international agreements entered into separately between the JAEA and applicants’ institutions.

Research duration

From the contraction execution date to March, 31 2027 (within 3 Japanese Fiscal Years).

Management of research fund

The annual cap amount of research fund is 5,000,000 JPY per project and the amount shall be determined depending on a research theme or duration. The research fund is not transferred to counterpart organization and the JAEA shall manage and execute the expenses instead. Expenditures to be incurred by the JAEA are expenses or costs from business trips, R&D, purchase of consumables, travel & hire of JAEA’s fellowship students, and organizing (Reimei) international workshops, etc. Regarding travel expenses for the principal investigator and relevant researchers on mutual exchanges will be reimbursed to the extent deemed necessary, under the JAEA’s budgetary control.

Number of adoption

A few projects are to be adopted to the program.

*The number of adopted projects may be varied as the program is subject to the approval of the national budget.

Review process

Applications are evaluated by the Reimei Research Evaluation Committee of the ASRC, composed of experts from within and outside the JAEA. The results shall be informed in writing in the date approved (probably the middle of June, 2024) and then, contract procedures for the Joint Research will be initiated.

Information provided through applications are strictly managed. Submitted documents will be used only for the review. Personal information of successful candidates will be used for subsequent research administration and those of the other candidates will be destroyed after being kept for one year.
