Research Group for Magnetism and Superconductivity in Actinide Compounds

5f electrons in actinides exhibit both itinerant and localized behavior similar to 3d and 4f electrons, 
respectively.  Because of this, actinide compounds occupy an important position in understanding physical 
properties derived from open shells in transition elements.  The strong spin-orbit interaction in f 
electrons creates a multipole degree of freedom by combining spin and orbital moments, leading to a variety 
of physical phenomena.  To further understand the physics of 5f electron systems, it is important to extend 
the research activity towards transuranium elements. Our research group aims to elucidate novel phenomena 
caused by 5f electrons in actinide compounds, by using following both experimental and theoretical 
techniques : development of new materials and high-quality single crystal growth, advanced microscopic 
measurements (neutron scattering, NMR and μSR) with different time/length scale and theoretical study on 
the complex electronic system consisting of spin-charge-orbital degree of freedom.
